Native Grasslands Conservation
from the Wildlife Habitat Council
The seven corporations featured in the report are DTE Energy, General Motors, ITC, Boeing, Koch, BP, and Exelon with land restoration projects ranging from roadside conservation practices to residential lawn replacement. The WHC has certified all of these projects and has awarded some with their “Certified Gold” status.
A member of the WHC since 1996, Ontario Power Generation is the main sponsor of the “Native Grasslands Conservation” report. The company provides half of Ontario’s electricity and has committed to habitat stewardship and the restoration of natural areas and species of concern on land they own.
The report ends with a “call to action for corporate landowners,” encouraging land-owning corporations of all sizes to start projects of their own similar to those detailed in the case studies. Corporations may use the WHC Grasslands Project Guidance (https://www.wildlifehc.org/knowledge-resource/grasslands-project-guidance/) to strategize and design a successful project and successful projects may seek WHC certification and awards.
As a convener of corporations, conservation organizations, and conservation-interested individuals, the Wildlife Habitat Council specializes in restoring undisturbed lands for the benefit of wildlife. The WHC’s “Native Grasslands Conservation” report includes seven case studies detailing specific conservation approaches led by corporations such as Boeing, BP Energy, and General Motors.
