U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef

Achieving sustainability in the beef industry may sound incredibly challenging, but the work of the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef proves otherwise. The organization hopes to transform the U.S. beef value chain into the global example for “environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable beef.”

As the world’s population increases, so do its demands on food supply and thus, natural resources. While the need for food has to be met, the The U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef hopes to do so sustainably and in a way that puts the least strain on the earth and promotes the livelihood of communities that produce and consume beef. With a mere 30% of people claiming to know how beef is raised and produced, the Roundtable also hopes to close a public awareness gap.

The Roundtable includes producers, allied industry, processors, retail, and civil society. Consequently, the organization is invested in giving all of these stakeholders a seat at the table in the form of forums for exchange of program and development information. Their vision for sustainable beef involves the collaboration of all of these groups under a common definition for sustainably-produced beef and various sustainability assessments and metrics.

The USRSB’s members represent more than 30% of America’s cattle, and more than 100 million consumers across the nation.
